"Die Linie überschreiten. Eine Zeichnungsausstellung" spielt mit Zeichnung als der elementarsten und unmittelbarsten Art ein Kunstwerk zu kreieren. Die 17 in Berlin ansässigen Künstler, die der Kurator Florian Müller-Klug für die Ausstellung ausgewählt hat, beschränken sich jedoch nicht auf die gezeichnete Linie als alleiniges Element ihrer Arbeiten. Vielmehr eint sie die Erweiterung des Begriffs Zeichnung durch die Verwendung unterschiedlicher Medien und Ausdrucksweisen. So versammelt die Ausstellung neben eher dem klassischen Zeichnungsbegriff zuzuordnenden Arbeiten auch Positionen die von einem zeichnerischen Ansatz ausgehend in andere künstlerische Kategorien vorstoßen. Die ausgestellten Arbeiten überschreiten etwa die Grenze zur Malerei und Skulptur. Videoarbeiten die auf Zeichnung basieren sind ebenso zu sehen wie Collagen, Installationen und konzeptuelle Positionen.
"Die Linie überschreiten“ zeigt so die Vielfalt der Möglichkeiten bei der Erschaffung von Kunstwerken, bei denen Zeichnung eine Rolle spielt. Dem Besucher der Ausstellung wird das beachtenswerte Potential vermittelt, über welches die Zeichnung heute verfügt. Anliegen der Ausstellung ist es am Beispiel der ausgewählten Werke sowohl die autonomen Ansprüche des Mediums herauszuarbeiten, als auch die Zeichnung als ein künstlerisches Medium zu zeigen, das ständig seine Möglichkeiten auszuweiten sucht.

Major overview of Dutch drawing after 1960

All About Drawing. 100 Dutch Artists provides insight into the development of drawing in the Netherlands from the 1960s up to the present day. Diana Wind, director of the Stedelijk Museum Schiedam and artist/curator Arno Kramer selected a hundred artists for whom drawing is the most important discipline in their oeuvre. The choice was also determined by the degree of originality and autonomous quality displayed, continuity in the oeuvre, the intensity of the work on paper, and diversity in the genres. Accordingly, a whole panorama of draughtsmen who realize work with an own signature can now be presented.

Artists have worked with many styles and genres in the period covered by All About Drawing. Draughtsmen such as Marijn Akkermans, Rik Smits and Jeroen Pomp, among others, have produced figurative drawings in which all forms of nature, humans, animals and architecture form the themes. The category of ‘abstraction, serial and fundamental’ contains the work of Jan Schoonhoven and Cor de Nobel, for example, while ‘text and form’ is represented by artists such as Marc Nagtzaam, Paul van der Eerden and Henri Jacobs. All forms of expression are represented in terms of style as well, ranging from the very disciplined abstract style of Gerda Teljeur and Arjan Janssen to the wilder drawings by David Bade and Charlotte Schleiffert. More sensitive and poetic drawings are also present in abundance; they have often been produced in large format, by artists such as Hanneke Francken, Elly Strik, Jacobien de Rooij, Hans de Wit, Erik Odijk and Renie Spoelstra. All About Drawing is an indispensable overview for everyone interested in post-war drawing.

Drawings Manifestation and Symposium
Many galleries, museums and art institutions participate in a parallel activity called Tekeningen Manifestatie(Drawings Manifestation), which is an initiative of the Stedelijk Museum Schiedam and is intended to elicit attention for drawing at as many locations as possible during the exhibition period. The Stedelijk Museum Schiedam will organize a symposium with speakers from home and abroad during this period.

Book
To accompany the exhibition, d’Jonge Hond Publishers will issue a voluminous book of 344 pages with more than 200 illustrations, and text contributions by Hans den Hartog Jager, Renée Steenbergen, Pietje Tegenbosch, Maria Barnas, Yasmijn Jarram, Arno Kramer and Diana Wind. The book places modern autonomous drawing in a historical and international context. The perception of the drawing by private collectors and museums and galleries is also dealt with.

“It’s sort of like the Velvet Underground – though I don’t know if Andy Warhol ever wanted to be in a band,” Berlin-based Sebastiaan Schlicher says of his band-cum-art-project Amerikan Teenager. The artist, who is originally from the Netherlands, has a truly multi-varied practice, that takes in drawing, painting, video – and band management. “The idea really just originated from me being unable to play an instrument but being fascinated by the idea of being a band, the whole mythology around it,” explains Schlicher. “My solution was to create a band that I could direct and I could come up with visuals and ask people to provide music for it.” A self-confessed devotee of all things rock and roll and whose work has a distinctly punkish edge, Schlicher’s practice is one of spontaneous self-expression. “Creation is the destruction of ideas. You have to get rid of everything in your head, all the garbage, to clear a path and surprise and excite yourself about what you’re doing,” he says. Drawing comes closest to the directness of expression he is after. “Drawing to me is more related to a physical practice and actually it’s a release where you look back at what you’ve done and see the mess you’ve created.” His works on paper - often classic punk-art collages - are darkly humorous, with subjects ranging from sibling rivalry to unemployment, while his materials range from the commonplace – felt-tip pen, acrylic – to the rare. His 2008 work Live On Blood features heroin residue found in a metro station. Straddling figuration and abstraction, and often featuring text, his paintings and drawings have a playful magnetism. He is bringing this sense of playfulness to a new Amerikan Teenager video featuring a cover version of The Christian Life by The Byrds. The footage is of a sleeping man with black smoke billowing out of his mouth. “I am fascinated with combining text and image in a way that suggests narrative when there isn’t one,” he says. “Making a music video frees me from having to do that.”

"This, for the benefit of future rock historians, is the transcript of a screenplay I wrote in the summer of 1977. It was tailored for the historic punk rock band the Sex Pistols, and was to be directed by Russ Meyer and produced by the impresario Malcolm McLaren. It still carried its original title, "Anarchy in the U.K.," although shortly after I phoned up with a suggested title change, which was accepted: "Who Killed Bambi?" I wrote about this adventure in my blog entry 'McLaren & Meyer & Rotten & Vicious & me'. Discussions with Meyer, McLaren and Rene Daalder led to this draft. All I intend to do here is reprint it. Comments are open, but I can't discuss what I wrote, why I wrote it, or what I should or shouldn't have written. Frankly, I have no idea."

This, and the facts that still-photography was done by MF:16; Pinger starred as some kind of weird anti-superhero; Schlicher and Van Zelm directed the thing; and ungodly amounts of alcohol were consumed during the shoot, make this highly un-commercial endeavor a typical AT project. Manon Awst wurde 1983 in Wales geboren und studierte Architektur an der Cambridge University. "De tentoonstelling Mythe Berlijn. Limburgse kunstenaars in Berlijn wordt georganiseerd door Museum Het Domein Sittard in samenwerking met cultureel maandblad Zuiderlucht. Zuiderlucht zocht en vond Limburgse kunstenaars in Berlijn en sprak met hen over kunst, over de stad en hun werk in relatie tot Berlijn. Museum Het Domein nodigde deze kunstenaars uit om hun Berlijnse werk aan het Limburgse publiek te laten zien. Vanaf 26 augustus zal in AINSI het werk van Hadassah Emmerich, William Engelen, Anneke Eussen, Alien Oosting, Wiebke Pöpel, Donya Saed en Sebastiaan Schlicher te zien zijn. Heeft Berlijn hun dromen als kunstenaar waar gemaakt of bleek Berlijn een Mythe? De foto’s die fotograaf Chris Keulen van de kunstenaars en Berlijn maakte zijn ook onderdeel van Mythe Berlijn. "The exhibition Mythe Berlijn. Limburgse kunstenaars in Berlijn is organized by Museum Het Domein Sittard in collaboration with monthly cultural magazine Zuiderlucht. Zuiderlucht talked with the artists, who all have their origins in Limburg or close ties with the region, about art, the city and their work in relation to Berlin Museum Het Domein invited these artist to exhibit their Berlin art in Limburg. 'Cotton Mouth' is the working title of a new Amerikan Teenager Betamax video that sees the return of Berlin based artist Hannes Gruber as Mr Goodtrips. The video ~~is due to premiere late August at an exhibition in Maastricht, The Netherlands, and~~ will be part of a musical performance by Amerikan Teenager. More news about the exhibition coming soon.
